[ARCHIVED] Treating Ash Trees Downtown

Ash trees in downtown Stevens Point are scheduled to be treated with a liquid insecticide which will be applied to the soil inside the enclosed grates around the base of the trees. The application will protect the ash trees from wood boring insects.

Ash trees in downtown Stevens Point are scheduled to be treated with a liquid insecticide which will be applied to the soil inside the enclosed grates around the base of the trees.

Because of their restricted growing areas, these trees are more prone to the effects of stresses such as the extreme drought we experienced this summer. When trees are stressed, they are more susceptible to attack by insects and disease. The insecticide application will protect the ash trees from wood boring insects such as the banded ash clearwing.

The insecticide application will also aid in Stevens Point's preparedness for an eventual emerald ash borer infestation. The main ingredient in the insecticide being applied, imidacloprid, is the same one found in many garden center products such as Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control, which is effective in protecting trees from the emerald ash borer.
