[ARCHIVED] Wisconsin Open Partisan Primary August 14

Clerk Moe reminds voters that the partisan primary is just a week away. The State Legislature moved the primary to the 2nd Tues. in Aug. to comply with a law designed to give military and overseas voters time to vote absentee.

Stevens Point City Clerk John Moe reminds voters that the partisan primary is just a week away on August 14. The State Legislature moved the partisan primary from the second Tuesday in September to the second Tuesday in August to comply with a federal law designed to give military and overseas voters enough time to vote by absentee ballot.

Voters should remember that Wisconsin’s August 14 partisan primary election is different than this November’s Election. Since the early 1900s, Wisconsin has had an “open primary” which gives voters more choices on Election Day. The partisan primary is a “party activity” in which voters may assist a single party in choosing its nominee for the general election.

“Our open primary system allows voters to receive a ballot without having to publicly declare their party affiliation. Voters choose their party preference in the privacy of the voting booth,” said Clerk Moe. “However, voters cannot crossover and vote for candidates of more than one political party.”

The offices that will appear on the partisan primary ballot are: U.S. Senator, Representative in Congress, State Senator, Representative to the Assembly, District Attorney, County Clerk, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, and Surveyor.

City of Stevens Point voters with questions about Wisconsin’s partisan primary election should contact City Clerk John Moe at 715-346-1569 or see the State Elections Division website at: gab.wi.gov.
