[ARCHIVED] City of Stevens Point Receives State Assistance for July 2011 Storm

The City of Stevens Point recently received a check for over $60,000 from the Wisconsin Disaster Fund to reimburse the city for damages and costs incurred as a result of the storm on July 19, 2011.

The City of Stevens Point recently received a check for over $60,000 from the Wisconsin Disaster Fund to reimburse the city for damages and costs incurred as a result of the storm on July 19, 2011. The Wisconsin Disaster Fund was created in 2006 to provide state disaster assistance to local government units when federal assistance is not available. Stevens Point experienced loss of trees, damage to cemeteries, and flooding of underpasses from the storm.

“This is the first time local government in this county received money from the Wisconsin Disaster Fund,” said Sandra Curtis, Emergency Management Director for Portage County. “Stockton also received $12,683 from the Fund for the same storm incident.”

Documenting damages and costs are important in getting funds from the state or federal levels. On Tuesday, May 1, Portage County Emergency Management will host training for township, village, city or county personnel responsible for overseeing damage assessment and/or collecting/recording damages incurred. Individuals who’d like to register for the training, which will run from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in Conference Room 5 of the Portage County Annex, should contact Corinna Neeb at 715-346-1397. The training is free.
