On Thursday, December 2, Stevens Point will be the first municipality in Wisconsin to be honored with a Bird City Wisconsin Award. The ceremony will be held in the Pineries Room of the Portage County Library.
The Bird City Wisconsin Initiative is modeled after the Tree City USA program run by the National Arbor Day Foundation. It encourages bird conservation activities and establishes set criteria for receipt of the Award.
Stevens Point surpassed the minimum number of 7 criteria with a total of 8. These included compliance with Smart Growth law, preservation of habitat along McDill Pond, belonging to the Tree City USA program for 29 years, participation in the Audubon Christmas Bird Count for 51 years, Cats Indoors program and nest box activities for songbirds with four different elementary schools in the Stevens Point area.
The program is open to the public.
