[ARCHIVED] Replanting Begins

The Stevens Point forestry department has begun replanting trees in Forest Cemetery with a donation from the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society.

The City of Stevens Point forestry department has begun replanting trees in Forest Cemetery with a donation from the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society. The Audubon Society donated 20 large bird/wildlife friendly trees to the City. The tree species include hackberry, burr oak, serviceberry, hawthorn and eastern red cedar.

During the July 19th storm, 63 mature trees were lost. The average size of the trees lost was 24 inches in diameter. In City-owned parks and cemeteries over 230 trees were destroyed. It will take a long time for the new trees to reach this size, but it is a beginning. Residents, businesses and other service groups which wish to contribute to the replanting efforts can contact the City of Stevens Point Forestry Department at 715-346-1532. The trees the Audubon Society donated will be planted Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. in Forest Cemetery on the north end of the cemetery.
