Wisconsin Public Service has begun a river bottom cleanup in the Wisconsin River near downtown Stevens Point. The project began the first week of October and should be completed by Thanksgiving. Crosby Ave. is closed north of the Riverfront Arts Center.
This section of the river, located adjacent to the south end of Pfiffner Pioneer Park, was near the site of a former manufactured gas plant. The land portion of this site was cleaned up in 1998 and similar activities are planned to complete the river bottom clean up in that area.
Over the past five years, Wisconsin Public Service has been working diligently with the EPA and the City of Stevens Point staff to develop a plan for the remediation of the river bottom. The area affected is adjacent to the former manufactured gas plant.
A Public Information Meeting was held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. Nearby residents and businesses have been contacted and are aware of the remediation process.
