[ARCHIVED] August 21 Incident on Water St.

At approximately 1 p.m. Wed., Aug. 21, the Stevens Point Fire Dept. responded to a citizen complaint of odor in the basement. The Dept. determined the odor was originating from the City’s sanitary system.

Police officers, Water and Wastewater employees, and Streets workers reported to the area of Francis and Water Streets. Streets were closed as workers removed manhole covers to attempt to isolate the cause of the abnormal readings and flush the system. The Plover Fire Department, Wisconsin Public Service, and Canadian National Railroad provided assistance at the scene.

Homes on Water and Francis Streets were checked for hazardous readings and all were normal. No residents were evacuated.

The cause of the abnormal readings was determined to be organic material in the sewer. Operations in the area were concluded at 5 p.m.
