[ARCHIVED] Sheriff's Dept. Seeks Donations for Second K-9 Unit

There is currently one K-9 assigned to one of the two patrol teams. A second K-9 would provide all law enforcement agencies in the county access to a dog every day of the year.

Baco, the current working dog, is on-call 24/7 for searches and SRT events, he normally works the week on/week off shift that his handler, Deputy Dan Wachowiak, works.

Baco has been involved in over 100 drug searches that were the result of drug investigations or just simple traffic stops where officers noticed some indication of drug use. The addition of a second dog will increase the capabilities of all patrol officers when making traffic stops or scheduling search warrants where drugs are the main objective. It will also increase searching capabilities.

The Portage County K-9 unit has always been supported by public funds, donations from individuals and groups throughout Portage County. The K-9 unit is available to any law enforcement agency that requests it. The dog has been used in every school district in the county, and has made presentations for many civic groups in Portage County.

Doubling the number of K-9s available to all of the potential users will increase public awareness of illegal drug issues and enforcement by all area law enforcement agencies. Having a K-9 unit working a shift every day of the year instead of every other week will increase our ability to interdict the flow of drugs into Portage County, provide additional security at all county schools, and increase officer safety when dealing with agitated or hiding suspects.

The purchase and training of a second Sheriff's Office K-9 unit is estimated at approximately $15,000. Over the next several months, the Sheriff's Dept. will be reaching out to individuals and groups in Portage County to raise the money to make this plan a reality.

The Sheriff's Office is very grateful for the public support that has made this K-9 program a success for the past 20 years and hopes the citizens of Portage County will see that there is a need for this second K-9 unit in Portage County.
