[ARCHIVED] Mayor Halverson Warns of Dismantling Public Transit

Mayor Halverson warns that if the collective bargaining elimination component of the budget repair bill is maintained; the City’s transit system would be in violation of federal requirements to collectively bargain with employees.

The Mayor of the City of Stevens Point today warned that in the event the collective bargaining elimination component of the budget repair bill is maintained; the City of Stevens Point’s transit system would be in violation of federal requirements to collectively bargain with employees. This move would in essence have the direct impact of elimination of public transit from the City of Stevens Point.

By not meeting these requirements, and by the State of Wisconsin saying it would be illegal to do so, Stevens Point and many other communities would simply no longer be eligible for federal funding for public transit: rendering public transit destroyed for Stevens Point. “This bill must be drastically changed or stopped in its entirety or we stand the real possibility of losing our entire public transit system.” Halverson said. “This Governor has done no real thought or follow through to what it really would mean to throw collective bargaining out the window.”

“This will affect the least fortunate amongst us who rely on public transportation day in and day out, laugh in the face of the environmental changes we have fought hard for over the last few years, and render our disabled immobile.” Halverson added. “I am asking everyone in Stevens Point and throughout the State to say: this bill must be stopped or drastically changed immediately.”
