[ARCHIVED] Mayor to Dissolve CDA; Places All Redevelopment Authority for City with Common Council

The Mayor announced his intentions to dissolve the Community Development Authority (CDA) of the City of Stevens Point and transfer all redevelopment authority and blight elimination for the City back to the Common Council.

The Mayor of the City of Stevens Point today announced his intentions to dissolve the Community Development Authority (CDA) of the City of Stevens Point and transfer all redevelopment authority and blight elimination for the City back to the Common Council of the City of Stevens Point as laid out in: WI Stat: 66.1331

This move will allow all acquisition of property, economic development, development incentives, blight elimination and sales of property, downtown and otherwise, to be made exclusively by the governing body of the City - the Common Council. The downtown redevelopment project before the voters next Tuesday which asks for a yes or no on whether to bond $5.9 Million for downtown would now be under the complete control of the Common Council of the City of Stevens Point.

“It is very clear to me that a project of this magnitude that invests $5.9 Million of our taxpayers' monies in downtown must be dealt with by those elected to make decisions on behalf of this community, that being the Common Council.” said Mayor Andrew Halverson “This process will ensure the most open and transparent implementation of this wonderful opportunity for our community and our downtown; and that is truly what the voters and citizens deserve: an active and responsive elected body making those decisions on their behalf with their direct input.” Halverson said.

In addition to this move, the City of Stevens Point would then simultaneously recreate a Housing Authority for the City of Stevens Point under Wisconsin Statute: 66.1201. This process will then allow the City of Stevens Point to have a seamless progression toward this much more responsive structure, for redevelopment in downtown and throughout Stevens Point.
