Historic Districts Nomination to the State and National Register of Historic Places
The City, in partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society, has pursued nominating the Clark Street – Main Street Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. Tim Heggland was selected as the consultant to pursue the nomination of the district through the application process.
The anticipated timeline for completing the nomination application is August, 2018 with a response from the National Register of Historic Places anticipated for early 2019. Thereafter, the City will continue to institute the recommendations of the 2011 Historic Intensive Survey Report, which recommends the nomination of four additional historic districts and several individual properties to the National Register of Historic Places. See the resources below for more information.
About Tax Credits and Design Guidelines
Properties that are within a national historic district are eligible to apply for tax credits when performing rehabilitation or restoration activities. Only property owners pursuing the use of tax credits need to meet certain design guidelines for their rehabilitation or restoration projects.
Property owners who do not pursue the use of tax credits are not required to follow the National Register of Historic Places Secretary's Standards for Rehabilitation. Note, however, that 1/3 of the properties within the proposed Clark Street – Main Street Historic District are currently within a locally-designated historic district and would need to meet local historic preservation design guidelines for any exterior improvements.
