Fire Department State Tank Inspection Program
In 1988,the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) introduced the Underground Storage Tank (UST) regulations to the State of Wisconsin under the Resource Conservatory
and Recovery Act Subtitle 1.
The enforcement of these regulations was critical after studies showed that precious groundwater throughout Wisconsin
and the U.S. was being contaminated by leaking underground storage tanks.
Statistics show that 50% of the U.S. population uses groundwater as drinking water and contamination of this resource
was not permissible.
Individuals representing fire departments and environmental
and health agencies have become Certified Tank Inspectors with the goal of stopping the health problems caused
by leaking tanks.
The Stevens Point Fire Department instituted the Tank
Program in 1994 and currently has five certified inspectors. The purpose is to prevent, find, and correct leaks
and spills from both underground and aboveground storage tanks.
This is accomplished by overseeing upgrades and removals
of old systems, installation of new systems, and inspections of operating systems. By participating in this program,
the Department hopes to do their part in protecting the environment from preventable contamination.
