Store in Downtown Stevens Point, March 20, 2002

At 1720 hours of March 20, 2002, a passerby used their cell phone to notify 911 of a fire in a downtown store. In this photo, a second alarm has already been issued as City Engine-1 arrives on scene. A city police cruiser blocks traffic to protect fire crews, equipment, and civilians.

Just moments later, the first line has already been deployed and assigned to protect Modern Interiors Furniture Store which is beside and slightly behind the involved two story building. Subsequently, this exposure suffered only minor smoke damage to the exterior portions of the building. A downed live power line can be seen in the foreground. Police officers were able to maintain crowd control to avoid civilian injury from this often unrecognized hazard.

Another line is being deployed to begin an aggressive interior attack on the ground floor. The upper line is joined by a back-up line and they turn their attention to extinguishment of the second floor areas.

This fire is almost ready for the history books. The incident commander and Fire Chief now discuss the impending steps of overhaul, scene security, cause determination, and operational recovery of the department's equipment and manpower.

The age of the building, coupled with the amount of fire damage and the subsequent cost of having to bring the structure up to current building codes, resulted in the owner razing this vacant store.

The first line of attack was placed in service through the back door of the home. A backup line is being advanced in this photo as the chief notes a safety concern for a faltering overhead power line.

The fire proved to be substantial as it exited the first floor window then reentered the structure's second floor and attic space through the exposed eaves. Metal roof sheeting added to the difficulty of ventilation and access to smoldering wooden shingles found underneath.
