Official Site of the Government of Stevens Point, Wisconsin   Fire Department Emergency Medical Services The Stevens Point Fire Department operates the Ambulance Service for Portage County. Everyone in the Department is cross-trained in Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Services, with everyone trained to at least the level of Emergency Medical Technician with automatic defibrillator certification. The Department has been an EMS forerunner for many years, being one of the first in the State to offer Emergency Medical Technicians, and later implementing Intermediate EMTs. In 1999, the Department transitioned to the Paramedics, highest level of pre-hospital care available. In 2002 the Department responded to 3,437 calls or about 10 runs per day. The calls for service varied from motor vehicle accidents to cardiac arrests to child birth. The Department does some On Scene Care for patients like diabetics and also does transfers to medical facilities in other cities. The Department has 4 ambulances staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can respond anywhere in the county within minutes. The coverage is approximately 810 square miles and is the only ambulance service in most of that area. We are very proud of the service we provide to the citizens of Portage County and work hard to maintain personalized and professional medical care. Portage County residents are fortunate to have a medical staff at St. Michael's Hospital Emergency Room that is progressive and aggressive in the treatment of patients through the actions of the ambulance service. The paramedic service is nothing more than an extension of the emergency room physician.
